A marine bacterial adhesion microplate test using the DAPI fluorescent dye: a new method to screen antifouling agents ArchiMer

Aims: To develop a method to screen antifouling agents against marine bacterial adhesion as a sensitive, rapid, quantitative microplate fluorescent test. Methods and Results: Our experimental method is based on a natural biofilm formed by mono-incubation of the marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas sp. D41 in sterile natural sea water in a 96 wells polystyrene microplate. The 4'6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) dye was used to quantify adhered bacteria in each well. The objective of this study is to define a reliable tool for dimensioning of adhesively bonded assemblies, particularly for marine and underwater applications. This paper presents experimental and numerical results, which describe the non-linear behaviour of an adhesive in a bonded assembly for various loadings. A modified Arcan fixture, well-suited for the study of the behaviour of bonded metal-metal assemblies, was developed in order to focus on the analysis of the behaviour of the adhesive in thin films. The adhesion of Salmonella (S.) strains to stainless steel and polyethylene and their inactivation by biocides used in food industry was investigated. Coupons of stainless steel and polyethylene were immersed in bacterial suspensions of S. Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium, and S. The alpha2ß1 integrin is a major collagen receptor that plays an essential role in the adhesion of normal and tumor cells to the extracellular matrix. Alternagin-C (ALT-C), a disintegrin-like protein purified from the venom of the Brazilian snake Bothrops alternatus, competitively interacts with the alpha2ß1 integrin, thereby inhibiting collagen binding. When immobilized in plate wells, ALT-C supports the adhesion of fibroblasts as well as of human vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and does not detach cells previously bound to collagen I. Architecture and relevance of several strongly adhered biofilms over a polyester imide (PEI) surface BJM

A microscopical study was undertaken to analyze the eventual fungi adhesion over a polyester imide surface in enameled copper wires. Scanning electron microscopy allowed to observe in these adhered biofilms, a high amount of pigments, hyphae and its enzymatic arsenal probably acting in the surface of the polymer. Due to the highly aromatic nature of this polyester and the residual phenol derivates still present in the reticulated polymer, an antifungal activity could be expected, but no significant changes were noted in fungal growing and in the adhesion process. RESUMODiversidade genética de Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae tem sido relatada em análise múltipla de repetições em tandem em número variável (MLVA). O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a distribuição espacial e a heterogeneidade genética de tipos de M. hyopneumoniae no Brasil, bem como investigar a correlação entre regiões de repetição 1 (RR1) e 3 (RR3) de duas adesinas importantes (P97 e P146). Foram identificados 39 tipos de MLVA baseados no número de repetições em tandem em P97 RR1 e RR3 P146. CCN2/CTGF silencing blocks cell aggregation in embryonal carcinoma P19 cell BJMBR

Connective tissue growth factor (CCN2/CTGF) is a matricellular-secreted protein involved in extracellular matrix remodeling. The P19 cell line is an embryonic carcinoma line widely used as a cellular model for differentiation and migration studies. In the present study, we employed an exogenous source of CCN2 and small interference RNA to address the role of CCN2 in the P19 cell aggregation phenomenon. Our data showed that increasing CCN2 protein concentrations from 0.1 to 20 nM decreased the number of cell clusters and dramatically increased cluster size without changing proliferation or cell survival, suggesting that CCN2 induced aggregation. They cause infertility and abortion, but there is no documented information on the susceptibility of bovine sperm cells to this bacteria. The aim of this present work was to study the effects provoked by Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis when in interaction with bovine sperm cells. The bovine spermatozoa were obtained frozen bovine semen pooled from uninfected bulls, and were exposed to living campylobacter over different periods of time.
